Flip Flop Throw Pillow

Instead of making one more boring pillow like the other ones HERE.

I decided to use some of the scraps from the outdoor fabric (it is very much like a sunbrella fabric) to make a little one for one of our chaise lounges.

I am CERTAIN this could be done better, cuter, with much more fun fabrics, but sorry people...this has to survive FOUR boys, possibly wet from the pool, and withstand the brutal sun and heat here!  Mr. Boss even commented that my "scale" was a bit off.  He felt the flip-flops were a bit too big for the small pillow.  I explained it was the only pillow form I had handy and I might have been a bit overzeoulous on the size.

Geesh...everyone is a critic...

Here is a quick run down on how I made this pillow....

Supplies:  Pillow background, scrap to make flip flops, scrap for straps, and thread.

I first sketched out the outline from a existing flip-flop (approximately women's size seven)

I used my quilt basting spray to keep my flip-flop from moving while I did a needle turn to stitch down the applique.

A great needle turn tutorial can be found in the vast internet or books, but basically you are folding  approximately 1/4 inch of the edge under and doing a ladder stitch like HERE.

Next came the straps.  I really liked the fringe effect from the remnant edge, so I folded the strip (approximately 16 inches long) so the edge was just shy of the fringe I wanted to keep and did a straight stitch.

Attaching the strap was done by laying it out the way I thought it looked "right"...no rhyme, no reason.

A simple tack at the center.

A quick ladder stitch at the ends so that it lined up with the edge of the "sandal"
Basic back-stitching 1/4 inch in with a thick cotton orange-brown thread I had hanging around.

Done!

Of course, I am assuming you know how to do a simple pillow cover, if you have been hanging around here long enough!

The ONE BIG problem?

The boys think it is fun to try them out.....

I am a bit in love with the pillow pattern and the ideas are now racing in my head...

.....now I am gathering some fabrics for inside the house.
Nothing better than a reminder to get outside!

And if you make one better than this one? Can you link to your blogpost/Flickr so I can see???

WIP Wednesday...What else?

It has been a bit crazy with the end of the school year.  But Memorial Day weekend proved to be a very good break and both Mr. Boss and I found ourselves getting a few projects done in between playing with the boys and having a birthday celebration for Bunny!

Finishes:

Outdoor Projects

I actually have finished most of the pillows, so I thought I would include it in finishes!

Seven throw pillows made with outdoor fabric.

I worked on them while Mr. Boss puttered around sealing our pavers and painting the playground.

I have a few more to do.
But Mr. Boss is pretty happy to have me work on some things for the family!

I still am in the middle of making a special project for the outdoors...stay tuned!!!
